Dear Friends,

On July 6, 2017 a magnitude 6.5 earthquake hit the province of Leyte around 4:30 pm as per the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). A strong magnitude 5.8 aftershock was recorded last Monday, July 10, 2017. Close to 300 aftershocks were recorded by Philvocs.

The earthquake left two (2) casualties and 329 injured. According to the report on Sunday, July 9, 2017 of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council the total recorded damaged has reached Php 51 Million.  Major roads and bridges were damaged but still passable. Schools and public places were gravely damaged as well. The Geothermal plants, the main source of power in Leyte, were not spared, leaving nearby areas with no electricity.  According to NDRRMC, 1700 houses were partially damaged and 700 houses were totally damaged. With that scenario, hundreds of families were relocated to temporarily shelters as aftershocks continue to rock the province.

We thus appeal to your generosity to aid the evacuees’ basic needs and for rehabilitation purposes.
