On March 25, Fr Mario Ombao, parish priest of Sto Niño Parish in Lapacan Sur, Inabanga, Bohol, formally turned over a newly constructed house to the family of Reynald Panghulan and Floramae Lofranco, residents of Brgy Fatima, Inabanga.

Tanging Yaman Foundation's Super Typhoon Odette rehab shelter project is being implemented by the Diocese of Talibon Social Action Center, which covers Inabanga. Construction teams composed of professional carpenters and parish volunteers have been working fast to provide decent housing to families who lost their property during the typhoon.

Housing Rehab in Nocnocan Island, Bohol

Poverty has forced many Filipinos to live in precarious conditions.

In Nocnocan Island, Talibon, Bohol, Pedro Mendez and dozens of other families have a foreshore lease agreement with DENR that allows them to set up houses at the edge of the shoreline. They have to build on stilts because they have no land.

Pedro's house was completely damaged during Super Typhoon Odette, leaving only the cement pillars. Last week, a team from the Blessed Trinity Cathedral Parish rebuilt the house of Pedro, who is coordinator of the chapel in the island.

Tanging Yaman Foundation sponsored the construction, one of 37 houses in the Diocese of Talibon, through its Odette rehabilitation funds. The parish also gathered additional donations for kitchenware and food during the house blessing on March 25.

We are grateful to Fr Doms Amoncio who coordinates the TYF-funded shelter and livelihood projects in the diocese, and who travelled to Nocnocan for the house blessing.

Parish Convent Rehab Project in Bien Unido, Bohol

Bien Unido was one of two towns in Bohol where Super Typhoon Odette made landfall on December 16, 2021. The scenes of devastation were overwhelming.

The convent building of the Sto Nińo Parish lost its roof; the glass windows and door in the second floor were shattered, the ceiling damaged. The second floor had served as the parish function room, where all meetings and seminars took place.

The parish, led by Fr Armando Bayron, borrowed money to replace the roof, but was unable to complete the reconstruction. Tanging Yaman Foundation provided P615,764.20 to replace the ceiling, glass windows and door, and electrical wiring.

Fr Bayron blessed the renovated convent on March 20, and meetings have again been held in the function room.

Chapel Rehab Projects in the Diocese of San Carlos

"Be it ever so humble, there’s no place like home," the poem goes.

That is equally true for these 27 chapels in the Diocese of San Carlos that are being constructed with help from TYF’s Super Typhoon Odette rehabilitation funds. The Diocese reports that 10 chapels have already been completed, with the rest still under construction.

However small or humble they may be, they embody the hopes and dreams of communities who came together to build, worship, and celebrate.

TYF thanks the Diocese of San Carlos Social Action Center in Negros Occidental for listening to the call of communities far from the town centers.
