Rehab Project in Hinobaan, Negros Occidental

At the height of Super Typhoon Odette, a tree crashed into the roof of a school building in St. Michael’s Academy of Hinobaan, Negros Occidental. In several other spots, roofing sheets were blown off. Classrooms and the library in two buildings were exposed to heavy rains, which resulted in a short circuit of electrical systems. The fire broke out in a classroom; fortunately, it was quickly put out, but the school administration had to take immediate action to prevent further disaster. They installed new electrical wirings, repaired the roof framing, and installed a new roof.

The Jesuit Philippine Province, through Tanging Yaman Foundation, agreed to provide P636,262 to finance the school’s rehabilitation.

Fr. Jiver Alipo-on, School Director, wrote, “Nong una kayong tumawag sa akin, napakagaan ng feeling ko knowing na may mga taong nakarinig ng pinagdadaanan namin.”

Immaculate Conception Parish Rehabilitation Project

The Immaculate Conception Parish in Poblacion, Dinagat serves two municipalities: Dinagat and San Jose. When Typhoon Odette made landfall in Dinagat, the parish church’s roof, ceiling, window grills, and doors were severely damaged.

Tanging Yaman Foundation contributed P500,000 for rehabilitation, which is expected to cost a total of P7-M.

Because all houses and buildings in Dinagat sustained damage, there is a high demand for construction materials and skilled labor, which has been a challenge to the project. Work started in May with the erection of scaffolding so that they can slowly dismantle the remaining pieces of the roof and clear the debris. Later, they will align the trusses and c purlins. In the photo, Parish priest Fr Joseph Cantilado, DCS personally inspects the scaffolding.

If the parish can get more funds, they hope to complete the roofing, ceiling, and electrical work by December 8, the parish feast day.
